Today marks the start of my blog series on skincare for your age.  Because the needs of your skin change as you get older, I wanted to discuss how to tailor your skincare routine to your specific needs.  Cecilia Wong Skincare was founded on the idea that aging isn’t the enemy.  There’s no reason to fear it and fight against inevitably growing older.  Rather, I try to offer my clients techniques and tools they can use to age gracefully and work with Mother Nature to look and feel their best.  Today, I’ll be starting with those who are in their twenties and focusing on how to establish good habits that will set you up to continue to have beautiful skin year after year.

In your twenties, the most important things to focus on are prevention, as well as combatting any blemishes that may have lingered from the teenage years.  The daily skincare routine I recommend consists of the following steps:

  1. Cleanse [Suggested product: Vitamin C Cleanser]
  2. Tone [Suggested product: Chamomile Toner]
  3. Moisturize [Suggested product: Oily Skin Moisturizer]
  4. Apply eye cream
  5. Finish with sunscreen [Suggested product: COOLA’s Mineral Face SPF 30 Cucumber Matte Finish Moisturizer]

Cleansing at this age is especially important, particularly for those who have oily or blemish-prone skin. Usually my younger clients will admit to me that they will occasionally fall asleep with their makeup on. This is one of the worst things you can do for your skin, as the makeup clogs your pores and can cause more congestion. I highly suggest getting into the habit of using a cleanser, such as my Vitamin C Cleanser, each night to brighten, reduce skin inflammation and balance oil production. Additionally, I find that the last two steps (eye cream and sunscreen) are left out from many 20-somethings’ skincare routine. It’s assumed that they are too young to begin using eye cream and many young people continue to have fun in the sun without SPF. However, as I said, this age is all about prevention! Keeping the delicate area around the eyes moisturized and hydrated will help to prevent fine lines from appearing in the future. Look for an eye cream that contains vitamins a, b, e, and antioxidants for optimal results. Sunscreen helps to prevent premature aging and hyper pigmentation that can occur from sun exposure without protection.

I also recommend that my younger clients start good habits early on so that they continue to take amazing care of their skin as time goes on. I’ve always taken a holistic approach to skincare, as I know first hand that a healthy lifestyle impacts the health of your skin. Eating a diet consisting of whole foods, including a huge variety of nutritious fruits and vegetables ensures that your skin will glow from the inside out. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day helps to keep you hydrated, which ultimately helps your skin to look plump and moisturized. Finally, though it can be hard at this age due to things like finishing school, beginning a career, and starting your life as an adult, I cannot stress how important it is to make sleep and movement a priority. Getting enough sleep helps your body to function optimally and keeps you looking well rested, while movement allows you to release stress and keep the blood flowing through your body, both of which help affect your skin.
