Happy Tuesday Lovely!
Today, I’ll be focusing on the next age group in my Aging Gracefully Skincare Series: those of you who are in your forties. At 41 years old myself, I find myself in this age group and I’m loving it. Your forties are such a fun time in your life, as you feel wiser and more comfortable with yourself then ever before. I personally have had to tweak my skincare routine as I’ve aged and I want to share the things that I know will help you look and feel your best. The needs of your skin change as you get older and tailoring your skincare routine to best suit those needs is essential for aging gracefully. Last time, we covered skincare for those of you who are in your thirties, which calls for targeting your specific skincare goals to start working with the aging process. Your forties, however, require more focus on hydration and the ingredients that are in the products you use. Here are my suggestions, which will make you feel like your best self in your forties:
I recommend sticking with the same daily skincare routine that I designed for those of you in your thirties, which includes: cleansing, exfoliating, toning, moisturizing, and applying eye cream and sunscreen. However, now is the time to really start paying attention to what ingredients you’re using. Almost every single ingredient on a skincare label should have a purpose that leads you one step closer to your dream complexion. There certainly is no reason to be using expensive toxic concoctions found in the department store, most of which contain chemicals that can do more harm than good. Instead look for ingredients with active repairing enzymes, which address cellular damage at a molecular level and help to reverse the aging process. Some of my favorites include vitamin c, kojic acid, and licorice root. When it comes to choosing a serum at this age, I recommend choosing one that’s high in antioxidants, collagen based, or hyaluronic acid based for the best results. My best-selling Black Currant Serum is an excellent option, as it’s an antioxidant rich blend of 12 precious, skin-nutrifying oils, which enriches skin with the right balance of nutrients.
As you age, your skin becomes thinner and can have more difficulty retaining moisture. Because of this, hydration is key in your forties. I recommend using a hydrating mask three to four times a week, which will help to keep the skin looking plump. Additionally, less moisture also leads to fine lines becoming more prominent. Because of this, now is the time to move from using the same simple, hydrating eye cream that you used in your twenties and thirties to using a more powerful, complex formula that corrects fine lines, wrinkles, and puffiness. The skin around the eyes is thin and delicate but using the right eye cream can do wonders for making this area look smooth and youthful.
In your forties I suggest further utilizing gua sha and other facial massage techniques, like jade rolling, by going from performing them a couple times a week to almost daily for the most impact. These treatments promote circulation, oxygenate the skin, depuff, and stimulate acupressure points. They also help with lymphatic drainage, an important bodily function for flushing out toxins that starts to become less efficient at this age. For those of you who have never heard of Gua Sha, it’s is an ancient facial therapy based on Traditional Chinese Medicine that’s amazing for improving blood circulation, relieving sinuses and tightening the skin.
