I have clients every now and then who believe they are doing everything right in terms of their skincare routine and are frustrated that their skin doesn’t seem to show their efforts. To try and get to the bottom of things, I often ask questions about their diet and lifestyle. Sure enough, my clients and I are able to see the issues and make a plan of attack. Here are the top five ways you might be sabotaging your skin and suggestions for how you can break these habits:
1. Not drinking enough water
Hydration is key for your skin to look youthful, plump, and glowing. While using amazing skincare products topically, like our Black Currant Serum, definitely help to promote healthy looking skin, the health of our skin starts internally. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day ensures that your entire body is properly hydrated. Remember that tea counts toward your 8 glasses. I love using freshly dried rosebuds in hot water to make my own tea. Hydrating and healthy!
2. Missing out on key nutrients in your diet
They say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. While eating well helps the whole body run efficiently, your skin is your largest organ and needs special tender care to stay in great shape. Your diet has a direct impact on the appearance of your skin. Avoiding heavily processed foods and refined sugar is imperative for bright and clear skin.
Do you dislike eating vegetables? Remember you can always supplement vitamins and nutrients with fresh squeezed or cold pressed juices – just be sure to avoid those with too much sugar. Focus on juices that are predominately vegetable based (rather than fruit based) and include nutrient-dense dark, leafy greens like kale and spinach and invigorating spices like ginger to help promote circulation.
3. Forgetting to apply sunscreen, particularly in the fall and winter
I tell clients all the time that protecting their skin from the sun year-round is so important! Just because the sun does not feel hot, does not mean it is not doing damage. Physical sunscreen (rather than chemical sunscreen) helps to physically block the rays of the sun from harming your skin and should be worn everyday. My favorite physical sunblock is by COOLA and it is cruelty free and natural, just like my line of products.
4. Changing your pillowcase infrequently
It may sound excessive, but experts say that changing your pillowcase every two to three days can help you to avoid sharing your sweet dreams with dirt and oil that can clog your pores and leave your skin looking less than flawless.
5. Taking showers that are too hot
Especially as the weather gets colder, many people are tempted to take long, hot showers to warm up. I suggest you avoid doing this, as super hot water actually strips your skin of its natural oils and can leave you feeling dry and itchy afterwards. Lukewarm to warm water is all you need for your shower and it won’t damage your skin.
