Is Your Skin Dry and Crackling?

by Cecilia on January 29, 2012

The cold can really take a toll on our skin. If you are experiencing dry patches, red rash-like irritation, itching, skin peeling, inflammation or flakiness – most likely, you’re not hydrating your skin enough. What I tell my clients is you have to make seasonal changes. New York dermatologist Julie Karen, M.D. states “skin care begins in the shower. “You have to make seasonal changes,” who recommends short showers using tepid water—a long, hot shower can actually leave skin dry—and products with minimal lather. This is so important especially in the winter time. Soap and fragrances can irritate skin further and cause itchiness, red rashes and extreme flakiness.

One of the ways to keep hydrated skin is to apply moisturizer or oils as soon as you get out of the shower. Your pores are open and this is a great way to lock the moisture into skin. Some of the best oils are grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil or my personal favorite, Black currant seed oil. Don’t worry about being too oily or greasy, in fact, your skin is probably so thirsty that the oil is going to soak right into it.

Remember, drink enough water, consume fruits and vegetables, follow a regular skin care regimen and you will have no problem battling dry and crackling skin this winter.
