I hope you’ve all been enjoying the last bit of this gorgeous summer that we have left! As back-to-school season begins and Labor Day approaches, I can’t help but feel a bit sentimental for the short season that always passes us by so quickly. It’s these last few weeks of summer that are bittersweet and therefore, we all seem to try to take advantage of the last bit of sun and sand, trying to squeeze every last drop out of it that we can. Despite this, enjoying summer doesn’t have to be synonymous with sun damage. At the beginning of the summer, I discussed how important it is to prevent sun damage and to use proper sun protection. Now that the summer will soon come to an end, I wanted to focus on an amazing ingredient that can actually help to eradicate sun damage and help keep your skin looking healthy.

As I’ve discussed in the past, certain vitamins and nutrients are the key to healthy, glowing skin. In particular, Vitamin C helps to improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin and strengthen skin’s barrier response. It also helps to reduce inflammation, promote collagen production, enhance the effectiveness of peels and microdermabrasion, and lessen hyper-pigmentation while actually boosting the efficacy of sunscreen actives. The great thing about Vitamin C is that it’s easily accessible and readily available for your consumption in the form of a variety of fruits and vegetables. Some of my favorites that are high in the potent vitamin include: oranges, red peppers, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, strawberries, and grapefruit. Eating a diet abundant in Vitamin C will help to repair your skin from the inside out, and as you all know, I’m a big believer that glowing skin starts from within!

In addition to consuming Vitamin C internally, it’s a good idea to take a more aggressive approach by also applying it topically. Skincare ingredients that contain high levels of Vitamin C, such as Tangerine Oil and Orange Peel Oil found in my Vitamin C Cleanser, can actually slow the rate of skin damage as a result of sun exposure. Using the cleanser each day can clean your skin of any pollutants and makeup, while also helping to rejuvenate damaged skin. Also, my best-selling Black Currant Serum contains Black Currant Seed Oil, which is really my go-to product when a client wants to reverse sun damage quickly. The tiny Black Currant fruit packs a punch, as it actually contains five times the Vitamin C found in an orange, making it extremely powerful.

When it comes to your lips, it’s important that you don’t forget to show them some love. Your lips can get burned and acquire damage too, which is why it’s important to use a lip product that helps to nourish them and reverse the effects of sun damage. My Lip Healer is specially formulated to contain a variety of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and Vitamin C in order to repair tissue damage. And as for your future adventures in the sun, don’t forget to cover up and use a high-quality SPF. My favorite brand is COOLA, particularly their SPF 30 Cucumber Matte Finish Sunscreen, which contains — you guessed it — Vitamin C in the form of Rosehip Oil. I love that this sunscreen protects your skin while also repairing it.
