Today, I wanted to discuss the role that nutrition plays in skincare. Early on, my mother taught me that eating nutritious plant-based foods would help me to clear up my skin. Ultimately, it was my love of fruits and vegetables that sparked my interest in how I could use them topically to help cure my own acne. Fruits and vegetables contain a wide variety of vitamins and minerals that are the building blocks of health. This applies both internally and externally. Believe it or not but your skin actually responds similarly to the rest of your body. For example, many people (myself included) swear by taking Vitamin C when they feel a cold coming on. Vitamin C helps to boost your system and build up your immunity. A comparable reaction happens when Vitamin C is applied topically to your skin. Your skin gets a boost while also brightening and feeding your skin necessary nutrients.

This time of year, there are so many amazing fresh fruits and vegetables available at local farmer’s markets. I love utilizing the produce that is available and at it’s peak ripeness. This means that not only do they have the best taste, but they also contain the most vitamins and antioxidants. Additionally, I’m passionate about eliminating food waste and I’m always trying to find new an interesting ways to use up the produce I use when making DIY skin recipes. In homage to the first time I ever applied fresh produce to my own skin (which happened to be when I was preparing myself a snack), I wanted to share some recipes with you that are 100% edible. Remember: healthy skin starts from within so by eating these nutritious recipes and applying them to your skin, you’re sure to glow like never before!

Hydrating Fruity Acne Mask

This acne mask is perfect for those of you who have dryer skin. The raw honey is very hydrating as well as antibacterial, which helps to kill acne-causing bacteria without over drying the skin. Meanwhile the Vitamin C content in the berries, papaya, and lemon juice helps to boost the skins defense against unnecessary oil and dirt that lead to breakouts. An added bonus is that this unlikely mixture of fruits smells amazing!

Make it into a snack:

Fruity Yogurt with Lemon Water

For a delicious, vitamin and nutrient-rich treat, add another handful of blueberries and raspberries and the remainder of the papaya to one cup of organic Greek Yogurt. Mix well and top with a drizzle of raw honey. Serve with a cup of warm water with some fresh squeezed lemon juice mixed in to aid digestion.

Brightening Antioxidant Berry Mask

This mask is made with some of the most antioxidant rich fruits available: fresh blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. These fruits are chock full of nutrients, including Vitamin C. After just a few minutes with this mask on your face, your skin will be exfoliated, brighter, and very plump and supple. I recommend using this mask twice a week to help brighten and exfoliate your skin.

Make it into a snack:

Berry-Coco Smoothie

For a hydrating, fiber-rich treat, add the leftover berries to a blender (about a half cup of each variety), along with 1 cup of coconut water, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, and a handful of ice. Blend until smooth. Adjust consistency by adding more ice or coconut water to achieve desired texture.

Papaya Peel

This peel utilizes the powerful natural enzymes found in the skin and juice of the papaya fruit. These enzymes help to chemically exfoliate your skin, allowing cell turnover and getting rid of dead skin cells. The result will be brighter, glowing skin that is as smooth as can be. This may seem like the easiest out of all three DIY recipes, however, it is one of the most powerful at-home remedies there is. In fact, one of my favorite face scrubs, Alchimie Forever’s Gentle Refining Scrub, also uses papaya enzymes to achieve a similar effect.

Make it into a snack:

Fresh Papaya Juice

For a yummy, simple treat, just add the fruit from the papaya to a juicer for a glass of refreshing papaya juice. Papaya juice is high in Vitamins C and A and is known to help aid digestion.
